If you have never juiced before, maybe you should give it a try. Juice fasting was one of my favourite food experiences. Bored with life one day I decided to browse through documentaries on Netflix and came across Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and that took me on a strictly juice journey for two weeks. Joe Cross, the pioneer of the juicing movement is an incredible icon of inspiration and has a lot of support for those who want to “Reboot with Joe”.
Juicing can be done anytime every day as a supplement to a clean whole foods based diet. But juice fasting is recommended for no longer than 10 days as a way of detoxing. Some people might need only 3 or 5 days while if you are really toxic, I recommend you do a 10 day detox, slowly reinforce solid foods back in to your diet and repeat in 4-6 months.
What about protein during a juicing fast?
So, when I mention juice fasting to my friends and family, the first thing they ask me is what about protein? The answer to this is simple. Protein in an integral component of any diet, and while adding juices as a supplement to your diet, you already should be incorporating adequate amounts of protein. But juice fasting is a temporary detox process. It is not a long term meal plan. Fruits and vegetables do contain small amounts of protein. In fact, I love telling people that 100 grams of broccoli contains more protein than 100 grams of beef. Artichokes and fresh green peas are high in protein. While you can add chia, flax or hemp seeds to your juice detox process if you are overly concerned, animal protein intake in not vital during the fasting interval. In fact, it’s best to steer clear of any broth or protein shakes during the detox for maximum benefits.
So why juicing? What are the benefits?
The benefits to juice fasting are not just a few to count. Green juices cleanse and rebuild the digestive system, soothe any inflammation there is, purge the body of acids by alkalizing, help elimination of toxic waste build up, restore cellular and tissue health, cleanse and enrich blood vessels, balance blood sugar and reboot metabolism to name a few.
Here is what happened when I did a 13 days of fast just juicing…
- My energy turned from sluggish to dynamic.
- My allergies disappeared
- My skin and hair started glowing again
- My dead looking eyes sparkled
- And best of all, I lost 15lbs!
Juicing is the perfect way to incorporate large quantities of nutrients into your body. Imagine eating 3 beets, 3 carrots, a whole bunch of celery, a bunch of spinach, 4 apples, 2 lemons, 2 oranges, 3 artichokes, 4 cucumbers and 6 bell peppers all in one day! But juicing can get all those fruits and vegetables in for enhanced nourishment.
Here is a little warning… If you are very sick or diabetic, juice fasting for periods longer than a day might not be a good idea. Consult your doctor before you start off with a detox. If detox fasting is out of the question, perhaps adding juicing as a supplement to a fibre rich clean diet could be very beneficial.
